about

Julie Yamashita is a Los Angeles-based ceramic artist and archivist whose work focuses on function, form, and color. Each one-of-a-kind piece is thrown and glazed by hand. Her fascination with textures and colors extends to fiber arts and jewelry making, and many decorative techniques from these genres appear in her ceramic work.

zaum-studio is an idea first conceived while studying modern Russian art in graduate school. "Zaum" is a Russian Futurist term that refers to something being transrational, or existing beyond what can be perceived with the senses or understood by rational thought.

Personal Statement: In my professional life, I have always operated under the belief that every experience and skill, no matter how obscure or seemingly unrelated to your current objectives, is valuable. In my creative life, I am only beginning to learn what I can create.
